Healthy Lessons from Our Pets

I recently read an article on WebMD which was titled: 20 health lessons you can learn from your pet. It was so interesting, I wanted to share Here’s a summary.

  • Forget Multitasking

Pets give you their full attention. Research shows that multitasking makes you less productive. Be present in the present!

  • Take a “Cat Nap”

Short naps keep your heart healthy and increase alertness.

  • Walk Every Day

I have a complete blog written on this topic. Most oncologists recommend walking at least 20 minutes/day 3x per week.

  • Cultivate Friendships

Having social connections leads to longer life.

  • Live in the Moment

In a study called “A Wandering Mind Is an Unhappy Mind,” Harvard psychologists conclude that people are happiest when doing activities that keep the mind focused, such as sex or exercise.

  • Practice Forgiveness

Holding a grudge increases anxiety. While you’re practicing forgiveness, don’t forget to forgive yourself. Rehashing old mistakes is destructive and holds no purpose.

  • Wag

Quite simply, smile and practice gratitude.

  • Maintain Curiosity

Studies have linked curiosity to psychological well-being and the expansion of knowledge and skills. Keep learning.

  • Be Silly

Laughter is the best medicine.

  • Get a Back Rub

The Power of touch. Massage therapy can ease pain, give the immune system a boost, and help manage chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes. Hug your loved ones.

  • Drink Lots of Water

This needs no explanation. There are articles all over the net on this topic.

  • Eat Fish

Salmon, tuna, trout, and other fatty fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which may reduce the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and arthritis.

  • If You Love Someone Show It

Tell your loved ones you love them everyday and often.

  • Play

Take time to have fun. Don’t be a workaholic.

  • Spend Time Outside

Get fresh air and Vitamin D. Spending time outside is not only relaxing but healthy.

  • Take Time to Groom

When you look good, you feel good. Self-esteem is important.

  • Be Aware of Body Language

Learning to read social cues helps our well-being.

  • Stretch Often

This is why Yoga is so good for you, but simply stretching throughout the day is a healthy practice. This is especially important if you have a sedentary job.

  • Seek the Shade

Take breaks!

  • Stick to a Schedule

People sleep better if they go to bed and get up at the same time every day, even on weekends. So when it comes to health lessons, look to your pet. Eat, sleep, stretch and be pampered

Carpe Diem!
